It is my understanding that I need to install two bilge pumps on my 25 ft Macgregor. What is the recommended gph for the primary bilge and the secondary bilge. Should I install submersible or standard bilge pumps?

Any information that you can provide is most appreciated.

Respectfully,
jeff

http://nyss.com/federal Unless you're dealing with tighter local regs (you should check) or a race committee's requirements, a bilge pump doesn't appear to be "required", but certainly recommended. A manually operated bilge pump with a minimum of 10 gallons/minute should suffice as a reasonable backup to any electrically operated system you might choose. So, 600 gph? Are you searching the forum archives for additional info? G'luck.

I have a little 500gph mounted almost under the compression post that seems to get most of the water out when I clean the bilge each year and test it.

The only trouble I ever had with it was when I replaced it last year (because it was at least 10 years old) was to wire it backwards.

It was a good thing I checked in a bucket first.

Outlet is about a food above the water line even with where the uper deck starts to slope to the fore deck.

My back up is a bucket.

And I still have all the foam.

No check valve?

Nope just a big loop in the hose.

Check valves can stick and not open.

If I heel over far enuff for the water to be higher than the top of the loop the pump will be out of the water untill the rail comes comes out and and the water goes back to the bottom where the pump can pick it up, I really don't sail that way.

I don't have a check valve or a loop, but....

...my discharge is very high.

I do have....

...a valve, but don't really know why the more I think about it. We are back at the boat now and I bought another pump, hose and some float valves and different toggle switches. Not sure I'll install them while we are out on the water unless we are sitting somewhere with nothing to do.

I personally think that with a S or D with the ballast tank in the middle a pump on both sides is a good idea and talk about why here....

Of course you don't have a S or D, so that wouldn't apply unless the keel trunk creates the same situation as the ballast tank.

I also talk about the pumps we bought in the link above.

I like the safety factor of a pump on the off chance we were holed. We have a hand one, but wonder if I would have time to man it if we were in a bad situation.

Good luck,

Sum

a typically 2 bilge pump setup would be a primary small 500 gph mounted low on a float sw, direct connected to the battery (+ a fuse), and a much larger secondary pump (and float sw) mounted about 6"-12" higher and with an alarm (that can be turned off). 2nd pump is usually a 2000+ gph.

IMHO, way over kill in a mac. I'd run a loop or make the top of the outlet hose much higher then the actual outlet so you can't backfeed the pump.
