Planning a one week trip to Orlando and would like to sail for a couple days. Looking for recommendations on bareboat charter and itinerary for two day sail. Area boat is located would be flexible. Sarasota to Tarpon Springs. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Currently sail Hunter 336, would prefer to remain at that size. (Only two going on the trip)

Vinoy Yacht Charters

Bryce - My wife and I chartered a H420 from Vinoy in St. Petersburg last year and were very happy with it. The only "shortcoming" was lack of an autopilot. Boat was clean and the Vinoy Resort is very nice. They're listed on Hunter Marine's website under Charters. Fair winds, Steve S/V Options

2nd the vote on the Vinoy..

Chartered an h32 from them some time back with good success. Went out under the Bay Bridge to the gulf and south (+/-12 miles), and back in for the night. Tied up for a really GREAT seafood dinner, (but forget where), ....retired there at the dock and returned the following day to a little backwater place on the south side of the bay and then back to the Vinoy for a steam, sauna, etc....... nice facility and a really good time. People were nice. ....watch the depth !.... it can come up fast in the wrong places. A chart was left on board of the bay which came in handy.

CALADESI ISLAND

is a nice place to overnight. It is a state park with floating docks (no electric). Inside Anclote Island is another nice spot to check out.

Sunsail or St. Pete Yacht Charters

I have chartered with St. Petersburg Yacht Charters and they were excellent, great location, well maintained boats, good value. I also recently visited Sunsail in St. Pete because I am considering putting a boat into their charter fleet and I was extremely impressed with their charter operation, location, boat inventory, as well as the various employees who I met there. These are both long-standing charter companies who you can feel comfortable dealing with.

Eggmont Key stop and on to Manatee river

from St. Pete is a nice 1 day trip. You don't want to spend the night at Eggmont because it is too exposed. But it is a nice place to stop and have lunch. Part of the island is a bird sanctuary, so be careful where you try to land. (Check with Charter co.) Go on to the Manatee River (just south) and anchor off DeSoto Point. The other place folks tend to go is a little farther south to Longboat Key. Either down the intercoastal from the Gulf, or out into the Gulf and in through Longboat Pass. A couple of good places to eat. Weekends can be a bit tough in either place, but this is not the worst part of the year. Still if you can plan for mid week, I think you will be happy. You will probably have to dodge some afternoon storms. Of course if you charter through the Vinoy, you could just go out for the day, and be back in Saint Pete for the evening. If the wind is out of the south, it can be hard to get out of Tampa Bay. In which case most people head east of Saint Petersburg over to Apollo Beach (?? not sure of the real name, since people tend to call it beer can island). Decent place to anchor, and you can go up on the beach. Not very tranquil. You might want to do the daysail and enjoy St. Pete in the evening. If you want a beach, you need to go over to the Gulf side - St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, etc.

consider Cape Canaveral area too

The weather pattern in Tampa bay has settled into some wind in the morning, hot and still in the afternoon and isolated thunderstorms in the evening. The Atlantic is actually closer to Orlando than Tampa, but I have no idea if there are any decent charter destinations. St. Augustine perhaps?

Last time I checked, St Augustine Sailing was still renting on a per day basis and they had several boats in the 25 to 30 ft range. However, St Augustine is a two-hour drive north of Orlando. Diamond 99 Marina in Melbourne may help. Rumor has it that they rent small keelboats (Catalina 22 or similar). St Aug Sailing (www.sta-sail.com) D-99's phone no. (321) 254-1490. Good luck.
