Recommendations- Hunter 310 to Catalina 310 or 320

We have been sailing a 25' Cape Dory (full keel) for over 20 years and have decided to move up to a new 31-32'. We are primarily cruisers sailing SF Bay and the Delta and maybe some very limited coastal crusing. We looked at the Hunter 310 and the Catalina 320. We also understand that Catalina makes/will make a 310. We would appreciate any recommendations, advise etc. The Hunter 310 looks good but the mast and rigging is very different(with no backstay and struts supporting the mainmast). Any comments on stability in light and heavy winds, quality of fittings, construction etc. Regards,Greg

Several good boats

Greg:We also sail in your area (Rio Vista, CA). For the money that you will spend on a new boat you could move up to a larger 35-37' boat from the same mfg. The Hunter 37C (just one option) is an extremely stiff boat for the delta and bay winds. If I were looking (and I always look) I would go to the Hunter/Cat. dealers and look at some of their trade/brokerage boats too. Also check out Lat. 38 (save some broker fees too). Most of these boats already have the equipment that you will need to add to a new boat. These used boats may need sails and some TLC but you get a lot more for your buck (IMHO).

Choices

The boats mentioned are all excellent boats. Hunter and Catalina build the boat well and stand up behind their product. IF they didn't, they would be out of business. Each company has different styling and and it really is up to you what you like. The biggest factor is support and service from your dealer. As for no back stay on the Hunters, the pluses outweigh the negatives. Often, I ma asked if the no back stay works and the answer is yes. As I tell my customers, remember the construction of the tall ships as the standing riging or as some say the rat rigging is what held the masts in place. They did not have true backstays.

F.Y.I "Backstays"

"ALL" of the whitebread and "ALL" of the Around the world alone race sail boats had "NO" backstay and most had a "B&R" rig...I am just finishing my sailing season and have put 700Km's. on my new 310.She is a great boat...Good luckSteve,s/v Obsession
