I'm buying an oday 22 on a Load Rite Trailer. What type of vehicle/hitch do I need to rent to haul it back home. 250 mi.

Any insights appreciated.

Dave.

You'll want a truck or SUV

and you'll want a class 3/class 4 hitch. That's the one where the inside diameter of the receiver is about 2 inches.

My Oday 22 is on a single axle trailer, but it's a strain, and I don't go very far. 250 miles is about 5 hours, so you don't want too small a vehicle- it'll be hell on the transmission.

Any vehicle with a factory tow package will be okay- they come with a trans cooler. The Explorers are mostly 6 cyl, and they can tow it. For comparison sake, the Escape, the next smallest SUV, could not handle it (front wheel drives don't tow well- hence the advice of truck or SUV). Good Luck-

I just towed my Oday 240 from Rochester to Toronto with my half ton pickup ( 5 liter engine, no towing extras other than frame mounted class 3 hitch). I stayed out of overdrive, kept the speeds at 60 mph or less, watched the instruments carefully, and checked the trailer wheel bearings for heat a couple of times. No problems.

Good luck

I recommend popping the dust caps/bearing buddies off and having a look at the bearings. if the cup is clean and greasy inside it should be ok, any signs of rust or water and repack them.

do they rent u-haul vans where you live?

If you are going to rent something, get a 3/4 ton pickup, as an inexperienced (I assume) person hauling an unfamiliar heavy load long distance, you want to stack the odds in your favor. While people have hauled with SUV's, minitrucks, and even jeeps, hauling near a vehicle's tow limit needs either experience or dumb luck. Be safe out there.

What area of Virginia? You have some serious foot hills in parts of Virginia. You may need to be thinking more about brakes on the trailer and what kind of brake controller you have in the vehicle if you are travelling over some of those steep grades.

Are you towing in Florida or the Colorado rockies? Your total tow weight includying trailer should be close to 3,800 lbs. so I would recommend a vehicle rated for at least 5,000 lbs. As far as engine power it depends on how hilly the terrain may be , a V-6 may handle the flats but for hilly country a V-8 may be required. Last but not least you should be able to stop vehicle and trailer in a reasonable distance. Towing in hilly terrain and in high speed roads will require the trailer to have its own brakes. Inflate the tires to their maximum rated PSI to combat heat build up and stop every hour to check tire and hub temperatures. Makesure the rental vehicle has at the very least a class III receiver and a four pins power connector.

I tow my O'day 22 with a Ford Escape V6. No problems here.
Have you ever weighed your boat and trailer? With a tow capacity of only 3500lbs you may be at or over the limit.

As someone who has done a bit of towing in my time, and seen first hand how small the brakes and how lightly built the smaller SUVs are, for anything other than a short trip to the launch ramp, they are undersized, and even then, if the s@#t hits the fan, you will be in trouble.

I towed a Lancer 25 (about 3800 lbs) on a EasyLoader trailer (about 1000 lbs) 125 miles with a Dakota 2WD, 3.9 liter engine. It went fine. I bought a Ford F150, 5.4 liter 4X4 off-road to haul it on a regular basis. At about 5000 lbs, it tows like a dream. Yours shoudl be significantly lighter.

I tow a Capri 22 fin keel with a 95 1/2 ton Silverado 4x4 pickup. Total weight of boat/trailer is probably about 3500 and the trailer has surge brakes. Never had a problem, though I haven't towed it over any mountain passes either. I too stay out of overdrive and watch the gas needle drop . . .
