Hi All,
I have 1984 Hunter 31 - The Rule 500 gph died this weekend.

Looking for recommendations on a new pump -
What are you using?

Reviews at West Marine are all over the board for Rule and Johnson products.

So let me know your thoughts.
Thanks
Mark

I just replaced my Rule 750 Auto pump with a Johnson 1000, with an Ultima sensor. So far so good, the sensor seems to work as it's supposed to, and while doing a clean out of the bilge this weekend, that pump seemed to being working as fast as the hose I was using to rinse things down. As far as longevity, that will have to be seen.

Just go ahead and replace with another Rule 500 gpm. You can go to a larger pump but you may have to increase the size of the discharge hose to get the benefits. I have held the belief for many years now that bilge pumps are more of a convenience item than a safety item. They are large enough to discharge the incidental water that collects in the bilge but not adequate to deal with any significant water intrusion. A 500 gpm should do a good job of discharging the bilge on your h31.

Like the OP, I wonder about the reliability of Rule pumps and if there is something "better" available. I replaced a defective Rule pump with a new Rule and within a year the new one failed. And my boat is pretty dry - I think the pump cycles maybe no more than once a week. So I would have expected the pump toi last longer than this. Is there a better pump out there?

Thanks all
I replace it with the 750 gal/ h since it had the same outlet.

I put a 2000 GPH pump in replacing the 500. Its still using the same hose and shoots out the side of the boat pretty good!

Anyone know of a "better" float switch that runs slightly longer than the ones that just float?

Since the smallest diameter in hose line system will dictate max gallons per hour expelled, most people buy too large a pump. Chief
