I had a cheep little hand held anemometer, but it seems to have died, so I was curious if anyone had good luck with a particular hand held unit. stopping in the middle of the lake to try and check the actual wind speed is iffy at best, but I find it amusing and somewhat educational anyway. ;) thanks.

Skymate.... I've had one for over13 years. very accurate and reliable. Above pic was taken in '04. Lots of new equipment since then, but the skymate is still a handy tool.

Some use an adapter on their smart phone. Be sure to read the reviews before spending money.

I just got a this one
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H3DTLBU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So far, so good. $16

It is durable and I like the 9V battery versus the Disc type in others meters.

Jim....
The cheepy one I had, that died, did use the disk batteries and they only lasted a few months when it worked at all. I was browsing again last night and ran across one on flee-bay that uses 3 AAA batteries, so I ordered it for that reason also. we'll see......

the wind does not touch the surface till 6 knts
white caps just start showing at ten knts
white caps numerous at 15 knts
white caps everywhere at 20 knts
.... and so on
the surface of the water is a very accurate wind gauge. it shows what is coming as well.

save your money. no need for these trinkets.

you can learn this stuff in a book for less money.

You're absolutely right Jon. many (most) people don't pay nearly enough attention to their surroundings. I was heavily into white water kayaking for many years, and flew hang gliders for 18 or so as well. It's automatic for me to always be aware of what the wind and water is doing.............. but I still want an anemometer ;) .

I tend to agree with Jon. I've had a hand held for a few years. Maybe used it twice for entertainment. What really matters is what your boat is doing and how you adjust.
Reading the water surface will point you where there is wind or point you to shelter when needed.

I have one of those Vaavud units with my iPhone. Used it a few times on my 15ft boat. Not so much on my current boat. Tried it the other day in the marina when we had a squall come through. Did not record the data correctly. Said 8 mph, while the wind was whistling through the standing rigging. That usually means 25 knots plus.
So I have this slightly used wind speed indicator for sale if someone is interested?
