A friend is trying to identify what type and vintage ship this wheel might have come from. It is approx. 4 feet in diameter.

Any ideas?

Any estimate of what it's value might be?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Most of these wheels were made as decorations for basements and sea food restaurants. Probably never steered a vessel.

Looks just like this one and I agree that it never was on a ship but made for decoration, mine has a brass name plate and I tried to research it years ago and came up with nothing........I have a ton of fun telling sea stories when strangers ask about it :Liar:

I just found some info that my wheel was made by a company that manufactured marine equipment in the 30's and 40's so it might have been made for a ship or came off one.....I acquired this from a boat house that once belonged to a famous industrialist.....I love the internet

"American Engineering Co. was 79 years old before it disappeared in
early 1947 to become a subsidiary of Hayes Manufacturing Co., of Grand
Rapids, MI. There are some reflections on the Internet of its history
as a supplier to shipbuilders."
