I'm looking for some advice. I've decided to sell Sonrisa. Shes located in the PNW...we're a bit isolated up here. I've noticed a number of recent purchases on this site and others. My question is, do you think I should put her on the market now, or wait until early spring? I've decided to try to sell her myself...I purchased her through a broker 7 years ago and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Thought I would market her on the standard sites: craigslist (Seattle), Sailboatlistings.com and perhaps this site. I've put together a "for sale" blog page with links to a photo sharing site. I'd appreciate any info./ advice on how best to sell her.

Thanks

Hi Fox,

Speaking for myself only, my wife and I have been kicking around getting another boat for a year. Just happened we saw a deal on the lake we cruise and went for it. We take ownership, hopefully this Friday 11/7/14, if the haulout and survey is good.

So you never know.

We will be listing our old boat, with a broker, so I am not sure what the sites charge to keep a boat listed.

Regards,
Nels

I sold a 270 a few years ago, sailboatlistings got 1 good response and 1 Nigerian Prince with a full price offer and a third party check. Got some serious buyers from this site (Catalina Owners) but I'd already got a buyer. My slip was in a highly visible area with a lot of pedestrian traffic and some brokers offices right in front. I got the best responses from the highly visible "For Sale" signs on the boat because of that. The buyer had looked at all the "bargain" boats in the harbor and mine looked like new. The sale closed 6 weeks after I first advertised, the boat was REALLY extra clean. All new canvas, mainsail, upholstery, running rigging etc. You might try boat trader .com also and any local boating magazines or newspapers in your area like Latitude 38 or Lat 38 itself.

Just my opinion.
I bought my boat from a broker also and will be very resident to do it again. I missed a private sale by a day. The private seller did as you are planning to do; pictures online, details of equipment and recent upgrades and repairs. That boat was only listed for 2 weeks before it sold. I would suggest that you have a survey done before you put it up for sale. It will let you know of any surprises before the sale and is showing the potential new owner that you are truthful in you advertisement.
It is also a bargaining tool when it comes to settling on the price. Just make the boat as clean and neat as you can before taking pictures. I know for me pictures of dirty laundry hanging in the V berth or head turned the wife off before I could explain anything.
