So is there any advice on the type of grease or source of instructions on rebuilding the 1 and 2 speed winches on this boat? Has anyone personally done this lately? Do you have any pictures? Is it a million parts or is it easy to rebuild?

It would help if we knew the winch manufacturer and model number.

Two are Barient #17 (for halyards - single speed, the other two are on the coaming for the Jib and are two-speed in the picture, not sure of the size, but bigger than the 17. Of course, the picture I have does not show the model number... The boat is down in Mexico and unfortunately I am not....

Interesting,
And for all these years.......... I have always found the most critical element of winch rebuilding/lubrication to be the carefully constructed and meticulously placed, and intricately taped cardboard box around the winch to be disassembled. Much easier lubricate parts when I do not drop/lose said parts. :soapbox:. The hydrophobic wheel bearing greases seem to work well for 5 plus years up here.

Sounds like sage advice. Will do. Consider your experience worth something..... thanks for the feedback.

I have the same boat as you and I completely stripped down, cleaned and re-lubed every single winch (6 of the them) on the boat. I have Lewmar 15 single-speed on either side of gangway on top, two Barient 2-speed and 2 Lewmar 16 single-speed located along the sides of the cockpit.

I was very concerned about how to go about this and that it would be very daunting. I researched a lot of You-Tube videos and then tackled the job.

It was extremely simple and not complicated. I removed every single gear, pawl and spring. I used varsol to clean every single cog and made sure everything was spotless, then used Harken winch grease (which, by the way you need very little -- don't over-lube as this is what picks up the dirt) on each of the gears and used standard engine oil (1 drop only) on each pawl.

The only issue I had was an annoyance with the design of the Lewmar 16 single-speed winch at the rear. The 'balloons' designed it in such a manner that in order to remove the main gear, you have to completely remove the base from the top of cockpit. This required removing the nuts under the base which are located in the aft cabin. Doable -- but friggin' annoying.

Also, I found a number of broken springs which are easy to order and as well, you will need to find the wrench (mine was plastic) that holds the mechanism while you loosen/tighten the screw holding the winch in place at the top.

Here are some pics I took -- if I can help in any way, let me know as I just did all of this 3 months ago :)

I am embarrassed to admit I did not clean and lube my winches, since buying the boat, because I was unsure how to do it, I have Maxwell winches, ( out of production) so parts would be almost impossible.
I did tackle the project, took pictures as I dis-assembled, so cleaning and re assembly was easy, I used a waterproof marine grease to lube them. I had no broken parts and very little wear, they should be fine now for a few years!
