We are now placing all the new interior into our Vega. Last week we
replaced the main bulkhead. We were able to reuse all the old solid
mahogany. The bulkhead is new plywood. (Most of the interior will be
new) I bolted and glued 1/4" aluminum plate to the front of the new
bulkhead. Quite a job to get the epoxy fill around the bulkhead. We
filled up a ziplock bag with the fill and cut off a corner. Then
Felicity filled up the gaps like icing on a cake. On top we used a
short bit of pipe ducked tape to the zip lock. The load is not to be
taken by the bolts but transferred to the hull and cabin top through
the fill.
A question for members. The port bulkhead forward of the main
bulkhead touches the underside of the deck. Is this standard? It
almost touches the deck on the starboard. The starboard bulkhead
under the cockpit also touches.
We have started to replace the galley yesterday. Going very well.
Another question. On the stove side of the galley how is the locker
usually arranged? Through the sliding door there is a half shelf that
rests on the door track and on a cleat on the divider. It looks like
it should have a full shelf. I did not sail our boat once before we
started working on it. Although we took a lot of pictures we missed a
couple of details.
I spent a couple of hours designing new water tanks. The previous
owners, the Coughlans suggested that I increase the water capacity.
They tried with flexible tanks and were disappointed. The two tanks
will be located in the cockpit lockers. They will be around 20 US
gallons each. They will conform to the hull and will look like the
locker floor. Although I could make them larger I thought it best
they they could be installed and serviced through the cockpit floor
hatch.
I am going to get some more pictures on our website in the next
couple of days. The address is on the link.
