scottdube is right. There is a clutch built into the windlass (at least on my Anchorman model). The purpose of the clutch is to release the motor drive when retrieval needs to be done manually. On my windlass the procedure to tighten/loosen the clutch (or brake) is to lock the drum and then use a winch handle to tighten or loosen the top cap. Its been 18 years since I have done this so I hope I have remembered correctly.
