Hi All, I'm looking at possibly upgrading from my Hunter 25 to a 27. But I would need to rebuild the Yanmar diesal on the H 27. I know nothing and the Yanmar sight didn't seem to help. I'm looking for places to get more info on rebuilding these diesal's. Got to learn sometime! Smooth sailing! TIA Garrett

Garrett....

The SB8 is kind of dificult to do for the average person. The transmission and engine are interwoven and require some special tools to disassemble. If you are going to make the move to a 27, don't bother rebuilding the SB8. There is a 1GM for sale in the "gear here" section for less than you'll have in the old engine. Repower even if it's used. You get the benefit of more power and newer technology, better fuel economy. My $.02 Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

Garret, I may have to agree with Pat on repower with a new engine....but, if you are on a budget, there is nothing wrong with repower your existing Yanmar. I did the same about 3 yrs ago when we bought our Catalina 30 - it came with a seized Yanmar YSM12. I pulled the engine and had a shop rebuild everything. She runs great and starts right-up. A little underpowered for my boat but then again, its an auxillary. I saved about 50% - plus it plugged right back into the boat. Depending on your mechanical ability...you may want to tackle a rebuild yourself. There is really not much to these smaller engines. If you know your way around a gas motor then go for it. Check out this site for Yanmar questions - excellent messageboards run by a mechanic. http://www.yanmarhelp.com/msgboard.mv Good luck! Rob

Help with your manual

Garrett, Sounds familiar, I have a 25 and moved just moved to a 27. The 25 is a great boat, I hope I like the 27 as well. ( I may keep the 25 an extra season just in case, assuming my wife lets me) If you email me at randygburns@yahoo.com I can share further info on the SB8 Randy
