Rebuilding a Water Filter.

Hi All,

I hope your weekend/week is going well.
I have a Dufour 34 1975.
It has a water filter that sits between the water bladders and the pumps.
It is the original filter from 1975 and looks like no one ever changed it or similar.

I was going to chuck it and get a west marine one but
decided to try rebuilding it instead as just buying and chucking is not much of a challenge.

The water is not used for drinking, I use it mainly for washing dishes and flushing the toilet today
but I plan on taking the sailboat further so want to make it drinkable for when I run out of bottled water.

If you have ever done anything like it, I appreciate the advice.
7014 is the lid, it has a "net", maybe mesh would be a better term.
The original looks like some metal.
I assume I am better off getting some sort of polyester
however I estimate the stainless steel will hold better to sharp activate charcoal that tries to rise.

Mesh size.
Assuming I go
Activated Carbon
Silica sand
I would need to filter the sand which is the higher layer.
so I'd need at least 100 mesh.
Is my logic deniable ?

Filter layers.
I've looked at various ones
Looks like
Activate Carbon is always there.
Silica sand is always there.
any other media you would recommend ? Zeolites ?
The water in the bladders is Marina water, so fresh water, it just sits in the bladders which makes it stinky, stale so no need for pebbles or similar I think.

Let me know.

Well, I would not rebuild it - I would chuck it and install a modern filtration system. The advances in filter technology are remarkable compared to that filter you are looking to "rebuild". Plus, they are not very expensive.
