Rebedding Stanchions

I have a 27' 1982 Catalina. I am in the process of rebedding my deck hardware. Currently I am rebedding the stanchions. I am using 3M 100 or 101 something like that, I don't have the product in front of me right now. Sorry. A few questions. How tight should I be tightening these nuts inside the cabin. I guess if you tight too much you could squeeze out all of the 3M product? I put a good coat of 3M inside the deck holes, on the bottom of the stanchion. How much should you really put? I didn't put any under the screw head. I just basically put a good amount on the stanchion base and tightened it down really well. Tips would be appreciated! Pres Broussard

That's fine stuff

See this discussion: http://archives.sailboatowners.com/pviewarch.htm?fno=20&sku=2007081072343.25&id=458398&ptl=#2007081173512.64 The sealant is supposed to make a "seal," so put it between the base, in the holes and under the screw heads. Do NOT tighten right away. Give the sealant time to set up, a day or two, then ONLY tighten the nuts from down below, NOT moving the screws -- to keep the seal.

Proper backing

If you are rebedding the stanchions, make sure you get the backing plates, if you don't already have them. I'm doing that this spring too. Same with the chainplate U-bolt kits. Some recommend letting the sealant partially cure before tightening, so that it forms a gasket of sorts.

counter sink the deck holes

with a counter sink bit to form a ring of sealent around the bolt I like to tape around the parts before i remove them, then clean off the old sealer counter sink the deck holes to form a1/8" sealent ring around the bolt ,then put bolts thru stanchion bace and spluge the bolts and bottom plate and bolt it down so the sealer comes out all the way around the plate.let it dry for a day .I think the guy at catalina told me to tighten to 15BL but i just snug them by feel. (dont over do it) I cut the sealer around the bace with a razor and peel it up.dont leave the tape on to long it a pain to peel off . John

Clean bottom

Don't put sealant on the backing plate. If water does get in, you want it to have a place to get out instead of soaking into the core. I suspect John meant the stanchion base and not the backing plate at the bottom, which is actually inside the cabin.

Cleats

Have you done your cleats yet? I had to loosen one of my forward cleats on my Catalina 22 and now can't tighten it back up. Does anyone know if they are attached with through bolts? If so, how do I gain access to the nuts?
