Calling on experience ports rebedders!!!

Just started on our spring project of rebedding our C30 leaky ports. Got the kit from Catalina direct, found as much information about doing this, as usual on this forum.

Here's the catch, when I took apart the ports, I could see a gap (1/8") in between both hull section (inside and outside), I have not found any indication anywhere, about the action to take regarding the gap between the inner deck skin and outer deck. Must it be sealed prior to installing ports, if so, with 3m 4200 or expoy? must it be left alone and risk water infiltration between decks? does it seal itself once the ports frames are tighten?

Your input would be appreciated, as I really do not wish to have to redo the job again, getting so close to having a dry bilge, although it seems very elusive!!!:)

Thanks to all,

Easier than I thought

I just rebedded 3 ports at a cost of $9.00 I obtained the dircetions from the Catalina 30 Owners Assoc. The gap on my '84 C-30 was filled with foam. I purchased a roll of butyl tape from an RV dealer, removed the windows cleaned the area well and placed the butyl tape on the window and replaced the windows. Did three with one roll and it took about 30min per window. After several days of rain no leaks. Toughest job was removing the chaulk the previous owner used to stop the leak:dance:

I got the kit from Catalina Direct, new gaskets and rebed. Then we had two weekends of extremely heavy rain, all leaked. The leak is between the gasket and frame, found out from CD that the gaskets are for 3/16" glass, some boats were produced with 1/8" glass, I'm pretty sure that is what mine is, have not taken one out yet to verify. I am looking for a single sided tape of about 1/16" thickness to apply to the interior side of the glass prior to installing in the gasket. Has anyone had this problem?

Ghislain, I would fill the void, but the 3M bedding supplied by CD should seal the ports just fine. I had one port that only had 1/8" overlap between the frame and hull on one corner. No leak there. What is you glass thickness?

Glenn,

All glass is rebedded in frame...1/8" seems about right but then again everything seem to fit tight when put together.

We are re-installing all frames on boat tonight...forecast if for rain by the week's end. So that should be the test.

Will seal gap with 3M product supllied by CD.

Thanks for your response.
