I had been noticing a problem with water collecting below the engine. Could not figure out where it was coming from but by luck was there at the right time to see the leak in progress. water is coming in at the place the traveler is mounted.

Given the load the treveler's rail must take under sail is there anything special I should be doing during disassembly and remounting. I am also thinking of replacing the teak with trex but was not smart enough to figure that out till after I came home and the boat is half an hour away so if anyone has the measurements that would be very helpful and save me running around.

Sorry, can't help with the measurements. But the cost difference isn't enough to really need it. Just order a five foot piece of 1 x 3. It is really easy to cut and shape. I did this years ago on my front traveler. I use PlasTeak because they are ten miles from my house( http://www.plasteak.com/osc/ ). In the picture the dorade covers, rails, and traveler base are all PlasTeak.

I really need to do it on the bridgedeck traveler. I have been too lazy because I know it is going to be a lot of work. Someone wrote about replacing theirs with an adjustable. I think they had to cut some of the bolts. Can you get to the nuts on all of your traveler bolts? I know that I can't. Then do you put the original back or replace with an expensive adjustable?

I have looked at the mounting of my traveler bolts on my boat, a flashlight, mirror, long extension, and deep socket are going to be your friend. It is a tight spot and the bolts are long.

I don't have your model, but reading your initial question, maybe some things to investigate/consider:

- Underneath, are the bolts just secured up against the underside of the fiberglass with washers and nuts? If so, making backing plates out of teak or other rot resistant hard wood such as IPE (common decking material) would add rigidity and distribute the strain more evenly.

- Give thought if Trex is rigid enough. I would think that since its made with a lot of recycled plastic of all sorts, it might compress over time with the tightness of the bolts. Then eventually cause the installation to loosen and leak again. Again, IPE should be readily available and is not terribly expensive. Your call on this.

- This might be a good project for butyl tape. You might want to search for articles on this topic on the Ask All Sailors by Maine Sail.

Have fun with the stop leak project!

Thanks again everyone, tomorrow sounds like a good sailing day so procrastination will win out I suspect. Did some research (translation asked our staff carpenter) into if a synthetic like Trex or Plasteak would work. Based on the limited research the answer seems to be yes, while it doesn't do well with torque, compression is not usually and issue, it apparently will twist but not compress. Since it will be bolted flat with the traveler bolted above I don't think twisting will be an issue.

As to going to a better traveler, Ed yours is already a generation newer, I have the one with the drop pins, which means it if loads up badly enough it can't be shifted. Should change it out but have used this year's allowance up. I would lover to consider going to a cabin top rig, but more money than I have left for this season.

No, we have the same traveler. The picture is of Blaise' traveler, the one that just won the "Regata del Sol al Sol". I agree re. compression and twist. My front traveler base out of PlasTeak is not going to compress.

I have had my traveler off and back on twice. All the bolts are accessible, but not necessarily easily. A young and flexible slave is handy for this operation.

Bill, I forget the year of your boat(and too lazy to look it up). Do you have the Yanmar panel under the traveler like mine? Those are the bolts that are inaccessible I have heard. I have never actually looked.

Hmm the young flexible slave just moved to California, may have to see if I can rent one somewhere...

I have a Hunter 33 - 1979 that was originally with the pin drop. Since I was always sailing single-handed I replaced it many years ago.......... and have been happy with it ever since. I attached it on a teak board (there was no PlasTeak then) and you can see that I have drilled holes through it so that the water will drain from the back side. The bolts run all the way from the top though the teak and connect to nuts inside the boat. Works line a charm. I think that I used silicone caulk so that I could remove it. The main line runs to the pedestal, so that I can control it with ease. I did look at prices now and was I surprised at the cost ----- Yes !!!.... But I still feel that it was money well spent, especially with winds on SF Bay ……
