I have an 89 33.5 that I would like to rebed stanchions. I have read other posts that suggest accessing the bolts through the hull and liner. there is no room between to even get a finger in. My thought was to use a hole saw to cut a neat hole that could be replaced to access, then replace.any ideas?

Are you sure they're through-bolted? Most of the ones I've seen have tapped aluminum plates embedded in the fiberglass, and the stanchions are held by machine screws. No nut or washer on the backside used or needed.

Bruce, I have a 1990 H-33.5 and had to remove, straighten, & re-bed all of my stanchions (due to a brain cramp when winterizing). As Robert suggested, they are mounted with SS machine screws that thread into a tapped metal plate embedded in the F.G. decking. I'm 1400 miles away from my boat currently (snow bird) but as I remember, the screw heads were philips. You may have to press down with a good size screwdriver, then put a pliers or vice-grips on the shank of the screwdriver to get it broken loose. Once started, they should back out easily.

Thanks Bruce for asking and guys for answering.

I need to do this job on my 88 33.5 and was going to tackle it soon. I will look at it tomorrow or on the weekend and let you know if that is how they work.

For those of you that are going to tackle this job, it is a good time to think about purchasing a roll or two of Butyl Tape that MS sells on this site.

Also look at his post regarding counter sinking the holes in the deck when using the butyl or caulking.

I had to replace one of the rear stanchions on my 88 33.5. I was able to access the 3 nuts holding them on from inside. The inside nut is fairly easy to get to, but the two outer ones are hidden inside the lip of the liner, but still accessible. I held the nuts with vice grips to prevent them from turning and was able to use a large Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the bolts from the deck. I’m not sure if the middle or front stanchions are fastened differently, but I would assume they would be the same. I would think that the 89 33.5 would be similar, since I don’t believe there were many changes between the two years. I think in 1990 the top sides were changed slightly.

rebed stanchions

Thanks for the replies. My stanchions were screwed into a plate and the screws were easy to take out and put back.
