reattaching hatch board retainers

Hi all,

I'm a new O'Day 23 owner. The boat is in good condition, but there are a few things I have to repair. One thing is I need to reattach the hatch retainers, the teak that holds the hatch boards in place. One is loose and not sure how to reattach. A previous attempt was made to attach it with screws, but the starboard side support looks like it is just glued. Any recommendations? I see that DR marine sells 3M 5200 marine sealant. Is that what I should use?

I replaced those teak boards on the 272...I think in your case I would call Rudy at D & R for his suggestion of how best to attach....mine are screwed thru to the teak bulkheads on the interior of that same bulkhead....yours may be the same depending on how the interior bulkhead is finished......Happy Clinton Sailing! Mine are screwed in.

Drill, insert screws, sail. :)

Mine on the 192 are through bolted through the cabin fiberglass, and through the teak plywood which is the inside back of the cabin. I think #10-24 bolts.

Ours on the 272 are thru-bolted as well...but not all of them....several go into the material
immediatly on inside bulkhead w/screws..

On my 25 they are screwed in. Do not use 5200. It is very difficult to remove anything glued with it without damaging the teak and gel coat.
Best bet is to fill screw holes with epoxy, I like a tube of West 610 for this. It goes in a caulking gun, uses mixing tubes on the end. You can get spare mixing tubes and the tube of 610 will last very long time.
After epoxy hardens, drill and install screws. Coat the screw threads with 3m 4200 after putting them through the teak boards. That will seal them.
Through bolting is a little overkill unless you are also attaching something on the inside.
