Afternoon:

Going to use a Garhauer radar tower mounted at the stern. I'm thinking that the radar reflector cannot be mounted on the mast but will have to be put on the backstay or mounted on the hoop that surounds the radar unit.

Anyone have experience with either types of this set up?

I think your radar will not see your reflector because it is too close to the scanner so you can put the reflector up high anywhere.thats why the mast

Doesn't bother the radar also. It has to do with the minimum range your radar will display returns. The new digital units are way better than the old time gear. My
Garmin can paint a stand up paddle boarder at half a mile.

The radar unit is a 3G Broadband unit and will pick up targets at a very close range

As a former Navy RADAR tech, in my opinion if your RADAR reflector on your mast would be a problem then so would your aluminum mast.

hi dino,
we have a garhauer mast on our stern with a br24 dome. Our radar reflector is a trilens on the mast and the beam misses it -not a problem. The garhauer mast is an excellent product, very well made and they were very helpful with the design and customization . We have an antenna hoop and an engine hoist mounted on ours. You'll be very happy with the pole mounted dome. We can see lobster pots right in front of the boat.

Chuck:

Good it hear a positive report on the set up and picking up lobster pots. I may get back to you for advice on that engine hoist.

Anytime! It's a standard garhauer product and it makes hauling our 5hp outboard from the dink to the pushpit rail easy. Also use it on the hard to haul batteries, etc off the boat

Oh, batteries off the boat. There is a risk you life, or your back, activity.

You got something there.

Regarding the radar picking up your mast, reflector and such, modern digital radars have software to delete the clutter less than 40 or 50 feet from the scanner so even if something is within your beam, if it is too close( based on the minuscule time of return) the software will delete it. Much of the manual adjustment formerly available in old Cold War era radars is now automated for better or worse by the software.
