Re:Teak hatches + hinge question

Hi All,
I had trouble finding the original post on the teak hatch covers
so I started a new one. I used the dimensions given on the AVA CD but
the disign I used is more like the original. I planed and joined 1
inch by 6 inch teak boards to the dimensions given on the CD. Joints
were glued with west system epoxy and filler. This required some
tools most of us don't have. I borrowed my brother in-laws shop for
an afternoon to use his planer and joiner. I made the cuts to fit
back in my garage with a circular saw for the straight sections and
jig saw for the corners. I clamped a four foot level to keep the cut
straght with the circular saw. I had some problems with the joints
and had some minimal warpage. I set the covers in place and traced
the opening from the bottom side. This was fairly easy since all the
panels are out of the interior still and no engine. I them used a
router table and a 3/4 cujtting bit to remove about 3/8 inch from
under side of the cover where it sits on the lip. Looks great, fits
great. I've invested about 150.00 US in the project so far. I still
have to attach the braces (3 istead of 2). Teak is pretty tough on
cutting blades and tools so its probably a good idea to offer to pay
for tool sharpening.
Now for the question: Has anyone replace the piano hinges with
strap type hinges? Is it an improvement? I noticed when I removed
the piano hinges some of the wood holes were stripped and all those
holes make me nervous.
Cheers,
Rob
