Hi Everyone, It seems that the two things that people exaggerate the most, at least of those things that can be discussed in this forum, are the gas mileage of their automobiles, and the fuel efficiency of their marine engines. Reference to the owners manual will frequently provide a more or less accurate figure for fuel consumption. A very good rule of thumb is .4 lbs/hp-hr for a diesel, .5 lbs/hp-hr for a four stroke gas engine and .6 lbs/hp-hr for a two stroke gas engine. Note that this is pounds per/hp-hr, not gallons. Further, you must use the actual horsepower, not the rated maximum h.p. For example, if you have a 13.5 hp engine, You may be cruising along at 8 or 9 hp. I would belive as much as a 30% improvement on these figures for a particular engine, but not the 100% or more some people claim. In other words, no-one is achieving .25 lbs/hp-hr for a diesel. Fortunately, I am leaving in a couple of days to drive down to Panama with a couple of friends, and won't be here to suffer the abuse of those of you who believe your engines use almost no fuel, and violate the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
