Thanks Brian,

Good points about insurance etc. IMO it should be up to the owner/host to see
that the vessel is properly insured. Although I don't carry insurance on my
own boat, it would only be prudent to have liability and loss insurance in
this situation. The visiting skipper sould be responsible for ensuring that
the vessel is seaworthy, properly equipped and in good order before taking her
out. As far as sailing ability of the visiting skipper and crew, I don't
know. I suppose that would have to be up to the host to determine. If it
really is an "Exchange" the question is probably moot. I would want to have
some sort of release form for the visiting skipper and crew to sign, accepting
responsibillity for the boat and for themselves too. It may not get the owner
completely off the hook if something catastrophic does happen, but it should
make the visiting skipper at least think about what they are doing with
someone elses boat.

Aloha,

sounds like there might be some legal mumbo jumbo.... but i know when i let a
friend out to sail a boat....or borrow a friends boat....its always been the
old...."break it ya fix it" moto. and of course treat items you borrow with
the respect they should be showed.

Thanks Chuck:

It doesn't take much to get me excited...but the possibilities for this type
of holiday exchange are well, exciting. My wife and I have imagined many
places to which we might sail / trailer our Vega in order to enjoy a variety
of sailing adventures in the coming years. However it would be great to
sample different areas before deciding to make a commitment to a particular
destination. I hope there are many other Vega owners with the same idea. Let
me know about the newsletter and the rate for new subscribers.
