Repower to Westerbeke

FYI- My O'Day 28 was repowered with a Westerbeke 20B (18HP). This HP seems perfect for a 28. The standard two blade prop moves it to hull speed and it cruises nicely at 2600 rpm (abt 5.5 knots). Engine does rev up to 3600 rpm (- rated max). I have good control in Marinas and in reverse so am very happy with this sized engine for a 28. The 20B is a small diesel and may fit in the 30 without modifications to the engine compartment. In my case I wanted to install a PYI dripless stuffing box and had to move the engine mounts forward about 4" to leave enough room. This necessitated remounting the companionway steps forward about 4" to do so. This was no particular problem and I can tell you how later if you need input on this. Hope this helps. I've found the 20b very reliable and it does not require bleeding. Check the Westerbeke site for details. -Ron s/v Wild Flower - West Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Re: repower

Meant to also suggest that if you repower, I would very strongly suggest you consider installing the PYY Shaft Seal at the same time. They run about $200. No more stuffing box leaks and wet bilges! I am very happy with mine. -Ron

Cockpit drains

Hi all, I'm back, this time with a Boat! I just purchased an 87 O'Day 322, She is generally in great shape however there a few items that I need to replace right away and am having difficulty sourcing locally. 1. the cockpit scuppers. The flanges that fit on the top of the cockpit and thread onto the 90 degree fitting (below deck) are broken and leaking. The remainder of the fittings are ok. 2.Tank vent caps. A couple are missing. 3. The fresh water tank S/W over valve is missing. Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide. I did email the link suggested by J.B. Dyer in a another post. BYW, you provided information regarding a rudder for a 322 last summer but I decided to take a pass on that boat due to other issues. Cheers, Ernie Whalley Guelph ON Have a Good Watch
