Its time to re-power my Bristol 24 and wish to buy a new 9.9 outboard motor. My question is will a 4 stroke fit into the well? has anybody out there repowered lately and had any sucess or failures they would like to share?

9.9 hp motor

Greetings from the cold, I think that a 10HP engine is pretty big for the space available. I owned a B-24 with a 6 HP, performances are quite good since the maximum hull speed is about 6 kts. More power won't make her go faster. On another topic, I am refurbishing the entire cabin with a diffent set up, previous owner used it a storage area and he had it stripped don to the hull. Any pictures of the inside of your boat? Gaston Girard

Fit

I have a Bristol 30 so can't tell what will fit, but I have an 8 hp 2 cycle and it is much smaller than my 6 hp 4 cycle engine. Do you have a trailer for your boat? If so I would trailer it to the dealer and test fit your motor before buying it. Tohatsu makes 6 hp 4 cycle out boards that can charge your batteries while running. These are the same engines as Merc and Nissan, as Tohatsu makes the small out boards for both of these co. Save the money and get the Tohatsu.

9.9 hp?

Agree with capitaine, 10 hp seems high and it will be quite heavy and bulky, especially in a 4 stroke. I hear good things about nissan/tohatsu and especially yamaha. I have a B27 (6600 pounds displacement) and happen to use a 15 hp extra-long shaft Evinrude 2 stroke only because I had it before I bought the B27. The 15 hp does fit into the well but not very easily. It is heavy and puts her out of trim. Also since we are in salt water I wrestle it out to flush it which is very awkward and could be dangerous to my back. So I want to replace the 15 with a 10 hp, although the 15 hp is nice for banging into a big chop... Since theoretical hull speed (knots) = 1.34 x square root of the water line length(in feet) and my B27 has a water line of only 19.75' her maximum hull speed is 6 kts. Horsepower needed to reach this speed, at least in theory... hp = displacement(in pounds)divided by the square of [150 /(hull speed)] For B27 this is about 6600/[(150/6)(150/6)] or 6600/(25x25) = 6600/625 = 10.4 hp I have not checked the B24's dimensions and displacement, but would guess you would be much happier with 6 hp or at least no more than 8 hp. You will want the shop to sell you the right prop for non-planing hull and your displacement. This will likely not be included with the engine -- unless you buy an engine model specifically designed for sail boats -- which could be a better idea. It is important to get the right diameter and pitch propeller to be able to cruise at the full rpm listed for the engine's horsepower rating. Otherwise you will be lugging it (as you are running at hull speed or less) and thereby severely flogging your new engine, or you will be running the engine at the right rpm but spinning the prop too fast and cavitating, which destroys the prop.

The old registration papers may help.

They should be available from the state. There may be a HIN pressed into the starboard top corner of the transom. On the electrical panel or near by tere may be some numbers. The old registration number on the bows will allow you to get back into the state records.

Thanks Ross, until it warms up a day I won't willingly crawl in to check for the HIN. What I do know is the previous owner said there was no HIN. Also he bought the boat as a power of sale, it was abandoned by a company in Port Credit, company was sold and the new owners had no idea they now owned the boat and wanted nothing to do with the hefty storage fees! Seems like a little more investigation is needed. I did contact in bristolowners.org (I think) anyone who has a boat similar to mine and guesstimated year to forward me photos and HIN location(s) if possible. Hopefully someone will respond. I do not know if it is a big deal, but i am curious as to the boat's history. cheers...bring on the warmer weather!!!

7.5 evinrude

well i push my B24 w/out rudder with old 7.5 yachtwin evinrude longshaft, i dont even know how old is the motor but works really well. I would'nt go over 8hp or under 6hp. on 8hp you just wasting your gas and noisy, 4-6hp okey but not fun for motoring. well if someone can tell me where i can get a new/surpplus rudder that would really nice. or even pics and dimension of the rudder since the rudder came lose from soft grounding but the shaft are still their. right now im building a back up rudder and im going to mount it inside the lazaret behind the motor rather than outside. i will post pics when i finish the ghetto fabolous rudder. (this is pre-bristol boat, its a sailstar corsair of bristol rhode island. i think is hull 13 but the title says 1966 bristol 24, hull#. 113 and the boat Hull ID#. is inside the cabin/v-berth on the arc where the mast is mounted its a 5 degits on arc and start with 0 and end with 13) so i figured its hull #13 i think! thanks in advance for rudder info.
