removehtml]It is time to replace my 15HP Nisnan 2 stroke. I have been looking at the Mercury 9.9 Prokicker with the 2.43 gear ratio. I would like some feed back from anyone that might have some first hand knowledge on this model. Thanks, Greg KellyError: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

MERC 15HP

ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO I REPLACED MY OUTBOARD WITH A 4 STROKE 15HP MERC. SO FAR NOT ONE PROBLEM WITH IT AND I HAVE BEEN SUPRISED AT HOW WELL THE ALTERNATOR WORKS. I BOUGHT THE 15HP RATHER THAN THE 9.9HP BECAUSE IT IS THE SAME MOTOR, SAME WEIGHT AND WAS ONLY ABOUT $200.00 MORE. AS I UNDERSTAND IT THE PRIMARY DIFFERENCE IS THE CARBORATION. FUEL CONSUMPTION IS GREAT, ABOUT 1/3 GAL/HR PUSHING A FAIRLY HEAVY 26' BOAT IN FLAT WATER. ABOUT 1/3 THROTTLE PUSHES THE BOAT AT HULL SPEED. I THOUGHT THE EXTRA $200 FOR MORE POWER WOULD SEEM PRETTY CHEAP THE ONE TIME I REALLY NEEDED MORE POWER. GOOD LUCK.

outboard replacement

Iv`e got a Pearson26 weekender displaces 5200 lbs got an old Mercury 8hp pushes it along at hull speed at 2/3 throttle. If you have a boat in this displacement class 10hp could be overpowered. More weight, more fuel Any 8hp 4 stroke should do it. Check out some of the Japanese motors.

Outboards

Mercury, Nissan and Tohatsu are all the exact same motor. All built by Tohatsu. I think 15 is probably overkill for this boat. But the alternator may make a difference for you. Online outboards is a good place to start.

Tohatsu

I really like my Tohatsu 9.8 on my Catalina 250 WK. Get the ultra long shaft. I don't see any reason to get more horsepower since the 9.8 gets the boat to hull speed with a lot of throttle left. Motors over 10 HP have their own registration requirements in most (maybe all) states. As has been said, the Merc, Nissan and Tohatsu are the same motor. I understand that the Mercury has some options on the tiller that are helpful but I'm not sure what specifically. The alternator on my 9.8 keeps my battery topped off.

Bigfoot

Is the Prokicker the same as the Mercury Bigfoot? If not check it out, it has a long shaft, big 3 blade prop and lots of low speed power. Might be just what you are looking for. Ray T

9.9 is more than enough

I have a 9.9 Yamaha 4-stroke High-Thrust with the 25" extra long shaft on my O'Day 25. I can't say enough good things about this motor. I was looking at the Tohatsu because it is slightly less expensive. The salesman at the Yamaha dealer said it best, "Why have hamburger when you can have steak?"

Tohatsu 9.8

I have the Tohatsu 9.8, long shaft on my 22' boat. Excellent power...starts right up. I did replace the original prop (3 blade) w/Tohatsu high thrust (4 blade) prop. Lost a bit of top end speed but the gain in maneuverability in tight spaces was well worth the tradeoff.

Tohatsu 6 hp

I sail a 25 foot boat that displaces 5200 lbs. Was quite happy with the 8hp Evinrude Sailtwin that was on the boat. Then it got wrecked in an unfortunate incident. After looking around I purchased a Tohatsu 6 hp with the 25" shaft. Comes equipped with a lighting coil. It's quiet. Powerful enough. At about half throttle it moves my boat through the water at hull speed. It's light - about 56 lbs - and it sips fuel. Unbelievably economical. Oh, and compared to the two stroke especially, its emissions are so low that I no longer feel like an eco-criminal whenever I fire it up.

I agree

anything over 10 horse is overkill. I use a 9.9 4 stroke Honda on my Ericson 25. It comes in at 5400# and the Honda moves it at hull speed at about 1/2 throttle. Had a 8 hp Nissan on my last boat and no problems.

Yamaha high thrust

I would go look at the Yamaha 8 high thrust with 25 inch shaft. My father has a 9.9 high thrust on his 10,000 pound 30 foot Irwin pound and it has no problem with power. So 8 would be fine for you.

Buy From A Dealer Where You Sail

Buy a Mercury. I have a Nissan 9.9 and it is difficult to get it serviced. No one other than the Nissan dealer wants to touch it, even if it is supposed to be the same motor. Mercury dealers have big egos and will tell you that they don't know anything about Nissans/Tohatsus. My advice is not to buy a Nissan or Tohatsu, (which is an unbranded Nissan) unless where you sail has a Nissan/Tohatsu dealer. Also, you might want to look at the Yamaha. I have friends with the high thrust Yamaha 8 HP and they love it. It has a power tilt which makes me envious. Anyway, buy a motor that can be dealer serviced locally. Otherwise you are going to be trailering it to a dealer for regular service.

Tohatsu/Mercury

Isn't it suprising Mercury shops can't seem to work on a Nissan 9.9? What Mercury doesn't tell customers is the fact that all mercury engines of 9.9 hp and lower are produced by Tohatsu. Tohatsu is the parent company of Nissan. Mercury also doesn't like to advertise that many of their power heads from 2000 to 2004 were manufactured under contract through Yamaha.

Tohatsu/Mercury

I have a 1998 Mercury 6hp for my Catalina 22 is this motor a Tohatsu? I was at the Milwaukee boat show 2 weeks ago and the person working at the Mercury display said the Mercury engines there under 10hp were not Tohatsus was he telling the truth or just wants to sell his Mercurys?

Merc salesman doesn't know his stuff!!

Tohatsu (who also own Nissan) have been making Mercury outboards 10 HP and under for a number of years.

We have a Catalina 25 fin keel

And an 8 horse Mercury. Since we are lake sailors, we do not have the long shaft. I would like the longer shaft, but the previous owner bought the short one. The 8hp is plenty for our C25 and we can cruise at 4-5kts without any difficulty. Mostly though we use the motor only when leaving the marina anyway, so speed is not a priority.

Buy online

You can save hundreds of $ using www.onlineoutboards.com. They sell Nissan and Tohatsu (same motors except the decal). I bought from them. Prompt service and free delivery. If the motor ever needs servicing the local shops will do the work. Why pay extra?
