I have a 1975 Catalina 30 with a Yanmar YSE-12 engine that is in need of major work. I am looking into my options for repowering with a rebuilt engine and I am looking for suggestions as to what engines I should consider. Obviously space is a major factor so if anyone has done this I would like to know what engines will fit in the boat without making extensive modifications.

Just curious. What's wrong with the Yanmar? It's a very easy engine to work on and if cared for will run forever. If it's just burning oil, it's really a quick fix. The piston practically pops out. New piston is only $100. Sean

At the end of last season the engine would only run for 20-30 seconds and then shut down, prior to that it was burning oil as well as leaking it. I would definitely be intersted in any information you could supply as far as repairing the engine. I think that may the least expensive way out, but most of the marine mechanics I have talked to in this area suggest repowering.

I think I can help you and save you some money. Obviously they would like you to repower your boat. It's around $8,000. Email me at seanshine113@yahoo.com. I will walk you through the fix for the stalling and oil burning. Oil leak may be a fuel leak.

Sean is right. The Yanmar YS 12 is a good one. Just read all the past talk about the Universal (Kabuto)and other diesels used. Im glad I have the Yanmar. It can be fixed.
