catalina 30 mk1 lahave river
Hi

I am new to this site and new to boating so any help would be great.

Last year we bought a 1979 catalina 30 and are in the procees of enjoying it whilst upgrading it.
I put in a new head and waste hose last season as the old head did not work correctly. Now I want to replace the intake to the head and galley foot pump, also the sink drains.
At the moment the head and galley pump pull water through a seacock located next to the head waste outlet and galley and head sinks drain through a seacock located under the galley. My question is, is this set up ok or should/could I swap the inlets and drains over to get the inlet away from the waste outlet.

Also there is a roten egg smell coming from the galley foot pump, would this be due to the lenght of hose and stagnet water lying in the hose from the seacock to the pump and if I swapped the set up over would the head start to smell instead as it doen't smell at the moment.

What type of hose should I use, I have access to alot of 3/4 clear reinforced pvc would this be suitible?

I do not want to use fresh water to flush the head unless I have no other choice.

Thanks for any help

Phil

Congrats on "new" boat and welcome aboard!

(Before anyone else jumps in, please note that he's in Nova Scotia, so he's not saddled with the need for a holding tank and all the related plumbing and aggravation that that we have).

I can answer a couple of your question right now...but I think we need to talk to decide how best modify sink drains, head intakes and discharges to get ti all right the first time.

I don't think you want the foot pump to pull in water from a thru-hull right next to the toilet discharge. However, whether the galley sink drain is a good place for the head intake depends on several factors.

I'd say that your rotten egg odor is definitely caused by stagnant sea water in the foot pump plumbing...however, it SHOULD go away after the enough water has been run through it to rinse all the stagnant water out. So we need to discuss that too.

...if I swapped the set up over would the head start to smell instead as it doen't smell at the moment?

There's a fix for that.

...I have access to alot of 3/4 clear reinforced pvc would this be suitible?

MAYBE in some parts of the plumbing, but not all.

Send me an email (click on my name at the left of this post to see instructions for email--NOT private message please???) and then we can
pick a good time to spend about 20 minutes on the phone, which will save me a BUNCH of typing!
