What a chore! Having her on the hard for repairs was a good time to re-pack the stuffing box. I first squirted some WD40 on the jam nut and tapped on it a few times with a hammer. Returned later, but it would not budge. Even with another pair of hands we could not break it loose. Then I squirted some Liquid Wrench on it, tapped it a few more times and returned an hour later. WahLah! The stuffing box is hard to get to on a P42, but I was able to get a good pull on the nut from the small access door at the bottom. It took about 30 minutes of picking with a dental pick to remove the three layers of 3/16th inch flax packing. I only hand tightened the stuffing box so that when the boat returns to the water I can tweak it before locking to make sure I have the right drip rate. Too, tight and it can burn the flax and destroy its' sealing properties. Terry S/V Belle-Vie Terry

Way to go

It took me two weeks over the winter to get my stuffing box flax out, having turned bitter hard over five years. There is much knashing of teeth over this subject in the Archives under "stuffing box." Enjoy.
