Re: little holes in hull

Hello-

It may be something a little more benign. I noticed on my Vega, that when I
power washed it (maybe a little too aggressively) that there were quite a
number of small sub-pea sized voids under the surface of the gel-coat that
the power washer was able to penetrate and break.

This spring's task will then be to sand the hull down to clean gel-coat
below the waterline and fix this...

Hi,
I noticed similar holes in the hull of my boat when it was layed-up last
year. As I didn\'t have the time to treat the hull completely, I removed the
upper layers of antifouling, filled the holes with gelcoat and put new
antifouling on it.
Last spring , when the boat was already back in the water,I met someone who
advised me to to the following:
1. Remove all the antifouling.
2.Measure the humidity level of the bare hull:
a. The hull is wet;
-put five layers of breathable mono component epoxy on it;
-put two layers of solid antifouling on it;
-put one layer of self-eroding antifouling on it.
b. The hull is dry:
-put a new layer of gelcoat (gelshield) on the hull (the whole
hull);
-put two layers of solid antifouling on it;
-put one layer of self-eroding antifouling on it.
After craning the boat out of the water this year, I noticed that some of
the gelcoat from the treated holes) has come loose again so I\'m going to
treat the hull in the above mentioned way in spring (you need 15°C to work
with the epoxy, don\'t you?).
Hope I\'ve been of some help.
If you would like to comment on the previous please do so before I buy the
products (next month).
P.S. A happy 2003 to all the Vegaterians in this newsgroup.

I have no comments on the procedures you outline, but when very small
blisters began to develop on a boat I had, not a Vega, the yard removed all
the bottom paint and applied an epoxy barrier coat. I don't know if it was
one part or two part. I believe they used a roller. I had no further
problems.

Mort,
Thanks for sending this mail, this confirms (in a way) what that man had
told me.
I\'ll start to apply the coats when the weather gets a bit warmer ( it\'s
winter here now and the temperatures are between +10°C and -10°C.
Kind regards,
Flor.
