Re-leather the Wheel?

The SS wheel of me 1999 Bavaria needs new leather covering. The leather there now is the original and has been restitched in places three times, but now the leather is actually tearing in places. The kits you see from WH, and even from Edson, are not sized perfectly for the rim circumference, it evidently being a metric size (i.e., not an Edson wheel). Edson service told me the best way to recover it; that is, to get the best job done, would be a custom “size and stitch.” That is, cut the leather to the correct size then stitch it. They actually have a local marine crafts person there in New Bedford (who would have thought?) who can do it, he told me. Not a deal-breaker for me, but I’d have to send it off, etc. I was thinking a little closer to home might work better logistically. Any suggestions about where to inquire? Who does this kind of nearly lost-art work these days, and where? I’ve already inquired around San Diego and San Pedro w/o success.:(

Contact boatleather.com I met the owner at the Newport International Boat show 16 years ago. A great guy and they match your wheel to the size it needs.
You can do it yourself or they will I believe. Not a difficult job for the off season.
I'm redoing my wheel this winter after 16 years so it wil show you the quality of their product.
They're in Seattle.
Hope this helps.

+1 on the Boatleather cover. I got one from them with the foam backing and love it. It's 12+ years old other boat owners still comment on how good it looks and feels. It does take several hours to sew on though. I did it over a few evenings.

I did ours last spring using #30 tarred twine and French Whipping, Turks Head at TDC. Total cost about $20 Canadian. 42 in. wheel.

Richard is right.....get the foam backing. It makes a big difference when handling the wheel for a length of time.

Non sequitur? Not asking here about repairing stitching. Looking for company or independent that can fit (cut) and stitch a completely new leathering for the wheel; a custom job for a new covering, etc. I imagine that topic has been brought up previously as well. But, people & businesses come and go, etc. Information of an old thread might not be helpful. But I’m looking at it.:)

It’s been going on three years since I made this query. Only last week did I finally by sheer happenstance “find” a local canvass shop that could (and would) do the custom wrapping in short time. Came out very nice!

Would you be willing to share what you paid to have it done?

It's not hard to do yourself if you buy a kit. My wheel was slightly off on the exact size too. I bought the regular Edson kit I think and took the wheel home, and did it while watching TV.
