I have a 1996 Beneteau 50 in charter use and the keys to the companionway hatch lock have "gone missing". The charter company could only swap it for another identical lock (with keys) from another boat, so I brought the old lock home to see if I can get it rekeyed. The lock was made by CAS in Italy, but I could not find the model on their website. My local locksmith seems clueless of how to rekey the lock, and BeneteauUSA was able to provide only blank keys. Does anyone have any similar experience or suggestions of how I might proceed?

That Comapnionway Key

BigBen, I have a 1990 Oceanis 390 with the same companionway lock. To add some spare keys I went to at least 8 locksmiths in the lower part of Vancouver Island last summer with little success. Most of them stared blankly at me in glassy-eyed incredulity. One of the shops appeared to have every key-set known to modern man. Finally, my boat-sitter Bert suggested I try a Datsun (Nissan) key shop and wonder of wonders -I now have a couple set of spares from a Datsun 280Z or some other model of similar vintage. They stick out further from my instrument panel than the original but who cares. You might give this a shot. Good luck, Peter S/V Tula

To avoid this in future....

See the info on this page below (my Beneteau First 235 Site) at bottom. For all to avoid this in the future, you can take your original key, which is $18 for a blank from Beneteau, and go to any locksmith and get it copied using the <b>AP5</b> Blank (pic in page below). This is super cheap and avoids the $18 markup. You lose the cool square key look though as the AP5 blank is round. Great to have backups. http://www.beneteau235.com/f235_hatch_boards.htm kh http://beneteau235.com

How About a Whole New Lock?

Have you contacted Beneteau to see how much a whole new lock is?

Blank Beneteau keys

This is in response to Kelly Holsten post about the cost of key blanks from Beneteau. I just talked to them today and ordered 2 blanks, they are priced at $4.00 each NOT $18.00. Contact: Todd Cranford Beneteau Customer Service phone: 843-629-5320 fax: 843-629-5329 todd.cranford@beneteauusa.com They are very nice to deal with. Rich

Cut a new key!

Your locksmith doesn't need to re-key the lock, he needs to make a key for the lock. I have seen locksmiths make new keys for locks without removing the cylinder. All you need is the blanks and some time. Jim

Is it the original SQUARE key?

Rich, Just curious. Are they sending you the original SQUARE KEY that went with the locks or just the typical round AP5 blank that is $4-5 at any locksmith? kh

Square blank Beneteau keys

Kelly H. I just received the order confirmation email today from Beneteau USA and it says... Part #: 231350, Description: key blank square head , Retail unit price: $4.40 . They told me on the phone that it was the square head type and the order confirmation....confirms it. Rich
