Re-engine a Beneteau 473

my wife and I are planning on purchasing a Beneteau 473. One of the boats we are looking at has a Westerbeake 63 hp engine which we are considering changing to a Yanmar 76 hp engine. We’re not sure yet if the current engine has some major issues (surveyor is going to take a hard look at it). The price of the boat may be negotiable enough that we are considering buying it anyway and putting a Yanmar 76 hp in it. I’ve looked online and it seems that this engine can be had for around $10,000. Can anyone answer the following questions. Generally speaking, aside from the cost of the engine itself, what does it cost to have the old engine pulled, and the new one installed? Can this be done through the companionway without having to cut the boat?

I would budget at least $25K total project including the engine. Repower projects usually grow to involve at least some modifications to or replacement of the raw water intake, muffler, exhaust, transmission, and engine electrical systems. I'd also take a hard look at Betamarine.

Very few surveyors are qualified to fully assess diesel engines and drive trains. It is not their thing. That is an engine specialist task. Before you go any further with your evaluation and inspection I urge you to retain the services of a qualified experienced diesel drive train mechanic. He/she can most accurately determine the condition of the existing engine, and give you accurate estimates for any necessary repair or the advisability of replacement. Yes, I understand this is a hassle, but nothing like the hassle of walking in blind and short of dollars to do a re-power. Having a qualified diesel mechanic on your purchase team is WAY more authoritative when you go to negotiating.

Some of the discontinued Westerbeakes have a following. You may be able to get something back for the old motor from a guy that needs major parts. Google around & see what they are selling for.
