I've been using the same Autohelm 1000 for about 15 years trouble free. Never
ran the battery down and performs perfectly. It came with a windvane but
never used it other than trying it and deciding I would adjust the compass
input when needed.

I have
an Autohelm 1000 but I am unable to secure it properly to the tiller. Did you
make a special bracket and attach it to the tiller to engage the autohelm arm?
If you have a picture or explanation of how it is fastened to the tiller, I
would appreciate it. If the file is too large, please send it to bhofler@....
