Re: [AlbinVega] US Documentation

Hi Wayne,

About your Fed documentation; I've been wanting to document my Lealea but do not have the necessary measurements, specifically, the depth of the hull. The measurement required if I remember correctly is from the deck to the top of the keel and I was planning to wait 'til my next haul out to get it. I believe the Vega is just at the minimum size so correct measurements would be critical. If you have the necessary measurements perhaps you could share them. I'm sure that this info would be of interest to many of us and I'd like to publish the procedure and necessary data in the newsletter (I was going to do that after I figured it out on my own but if you've already done the legwork.......)

Chuck: Saw your exchange on documentation. Perhaps I can help a little.......... Our Vega Discovery, Hailing Port - New York is a documented US Vessel. This requires us to have her name and hailing port of a certain size conspicuously and permanently marked on her and to carry her papers at all times. The documentation number is also permanently "burned" into her. We are also registered with the State of NY. A documented vessel need not carry her registration numbers (makes for a preety uncluttered bow line sheer) but a documented vessel is required to be registered in local waters. The minimum size requirement is 27'. The displacement of a 27' foot boat presumptively meets the minimum required by federal law. I don't think a Vega requires any other measurement. The Vega is actually rated a 27'1" so this is a Godsend for documentation as it is just above the regulatory minimum and no further data should be required. Boats this size are usually documented for Recreational use (ie non-commercial, non-coastal passage or non-fishery use). The National Vessel Documentation Center is in West Virginia perhaps courtesy of Senator Robert Byrd's awesome seniority in the US Senate. Address: 2039 Stonewall Jackson Drive Falling Waters WV 25419-9502 Tel: 800-799-8362 and 304-271-2400 - Fax: 304-271-2405 My Advice is to call and ask for a documentation kit. Once you have received the application and instructions take it from there. Call and ask questions and you will obtain assistance. It's not easy to document your boat, but in the event that any of us ever sails in international waters or sail to foreign ports, there are certain protections in carrying the beautiful Stars and Stripes and your papers. Documentation is to a vessel in metaphorical effect, what a passport is for a citizen. Similar rights accrue and protections apply in each case. Is it too late to order the Rose Vega newsletter for this year? I do not require a Vega kit. Sid - God Bless Him- sent me one not long before he passed away. He was very kind to us when we bought our Vega a while back. Sorry.....I have had a sentimental mental block about reordering the Vega letter since Sid passed away. Cheers to you and yours. Every best wish............. Jim Villa & Debra Vega No. 3228 'Discovery'

Thanks for the reply Jim

I've already got the forms from the USCG. The minimum size for documentation is something like 6 tons - based on cargo hold capacity. They say that most boats over 26 feet qualify. On a pleasure craft they take the volume of what would have been the cargo hold, sort of. Anyway, you need three measurements; length, beam and depth to determine volume. Length and beam are readily available. It's the depth of hold I've had trouble with. According to the USCG, you must measure from the underside of the deck, not including the cabin house, to the top of the keel. I figured I'd get that when I haul out next by measuring the distance from the deck joint to the drain plug. I think I'll take your advice and call and ask d;^)

As for the Newsletter, it's never too late! I'm just wrapping up the first issue of 2001. Are you the "James Villa" in Brooklyn, NY who is on my original list? If so you should have received the last three issues that I published. If you have not yet renewed, this coming issue, Feb/Mar 2001, will be your last issue. So if you renew now you won't miss a beat. BTW I know how you feel about Sid. I felt some of that myself but I felt it more important that we keep it alive. After spending a day with Sid's widow, Florence, last month and seeing his home and where he worked on the Newsletter, his desk and momentos of his long association with the Vega community, I am even more committed.

I documented Journeyman myself. I do this stuff all the time and the Cogard
was happy to use seven feet for depth of hold.

Journeyman 1671.
