Hull liners.

My guess for hull liners are
1) Insulation - although the hull is fairly thick compared to modern standards, the inside of the topsides could probably benefit from some extra insulation.
2) Sound Dampening - The hull on my 19 footer that I used to sail around the Bay was fairly thin, with a thin layer of carpeting. When anchored out at night, you could hear all kinds of bumps and clicking and scratching from the crabs and other marine life checking out my boat bottom.
3) Damage Control - Especially inside lockers. You don't want that heavy, pointy, (fill in the blank) thingy banging against the painted fiberglass surface everytime you come off a wave.
4) Aesthetics - I didn't want to include this one, but for some people it might be important.
