1970 would make it a pretty early Vega (Not a bad thing) that most likely came with a gas engine (Steve?) I'd say that if you don't mind that "Thing" hanging off the transom, the outboard may even be an improvement: better handling in reverse, more storage room, less weight and, possibly, better fuel economy and with the outboard of course there will be no concern with the combi-drive. Nonetheless, most of us have inboard diesel powerplants.

As for the rest, I'd recommend a professional survey. Potential problem areas peculiar to the Vega are rudder delamination and mast beam deflection but these are by no means universal. My own Vega, hull no. 1860 built in 1973, has exhibited neither of these problems.

As a 1970 Vega it will be ex-petrol (gas) installation. Don't know about
the fuel economy being better with an outboard!

Look for the usual stuff, round the mast step, any star crazing by
chainplates etc, forestay fitting for any sign of rust whatsoever,
rigging, skin fittings etc. All this can be quite easily repaired so it
would not be a problem to fix and quite inexpensive. Hope this helps.

Seems it should be a later model, my Vega is hull #1874 and was built in 1973 with the Volvo MD6A.

Thanks for the replies. I hope to be able to take a look at the boat in
person over the weekend. I am not sure what the hull number is for the boat.
Probably have a good friend of mine who is a surveyor come by and give it a
once over. The first boat I owned required a full barrier coat which was a
lot of work but nothing I couldn't do again.
