RE: [AlbinVega] Paul Rutgers V#709 Chicago inboard vs outboard

IRT the recent questions on outboard vs. inboard for a vega. I sailed
Fortunes Lady (V1469) from Chesapeake Beach, MD where I purchased her to
Portsmouth, VA and have only an 8 hp four stroke honda outboard. I had 5-6
seas in the ches. bay the second to last day and while the engine had no
problems pushing her along the pitching caused the prop to come out of the
water quite a bit. I think an outboard would be fine for day cruising or
just getting into your harbour but I would recommend a long shaft model.
I'll be installing one of the betas available from the VAGB next winter or
so. I simply dont like the idea of having any more gasoline on board than I
have to. :)James Ward,

Hi All

Just to add my two penneth..

As mentioned, I think that an outboard is fine in enclosed flat waters. When I
sailed to the IFR in 1998 on The Medway in company with three other Vegas we
had a similar problem returning to the South Coast as one of the Vegas engines
seized. They bolted on an 8HP outboard and had one hell of a trip back. The
journey should have taken three to four easy cruising days but ended up taking
over two weeks! When the seas were lumpy then the outboard could not
handle it
and as we were heading due west and the prevailing wind was F3 to 4 Westerly
you can see the problem. One of the trips was from Dover to Eastbourne (45
miles) and that was horrendous even with an inboard diesel trying to punch to
windward. The outboard Vega had no chance and tried three times before finally
managing to make it on the fourth attempt, even then they had help from the
lifeboat.

Kind Reagrds to all and Happy Christmas
