If you are talking about that little fine screen filter that is about 2-3 inches in diameter, I had a little problem with that too. Mostly identifying where the seam to the lid was. The lid looks like a little cymbal or "top-hat" that musicans use. So the seam is along the top face of the enclosure. Once I found that, it wasn't hard getting it off. It's hard to find the seam with all the paint on it.
Used carburator cleaning spray to clean the screen.
I had to change the gasket when replacing the lid. I used paper and permatex, but have since read that Buna-N rubber is preferred for fuel gaskets. I got some from McMaster Carr. Though not sure if you can get it in really thin sheets from them.
