Re: [AlbinVega] Greetings & a leak

In the interest of giving Victor something else to read and hopefully
solving an irritating problem I thought I'd write. Just recently I've
started to discover freshwater pooling up in the bottom of the
starboard locker below the settee. At first I thought it was a leak
from the water line which runs along there but that's proven not to be
the case and now I'm pretty sure it's rain related. I can find no
evidence of leaks nearby. The seat back lockers are dry. The shelf
above is dry. The locker under the sink seems fine. The seal along
the deck-hull joint on that side is dry as far as I can tell. I tried
sealing off around the chain locker deck entrance but that didn't seem
to help. It's quite a bit of water, maybe a half gallon after a good
rain. What doesn't seep down into the bilge, I sop up with a large
sponge. Any ideas?

Garry,
From past experience, and assuming your freshwater arrangement is the same
as on Alkira, I would suspect a leak in the foot pump.
I had the same symptoms and also suspected rain water entry but if I
remember correctly it proved to be a split in one of the pump diaphragms.
If the water tank is full there is a head above the pump of 1 to 1.5 feet.
That gives in excess of 0.5 psi. at the pump, not enough to cause a
noticeable flow of water but sufficient to build up in time.
In my case leaking waking water was channelled some distance away from the
pump by the moulded upstand to which the bunk fronts are bolted.

Frank,

Thanks for responding. I should have mentioned that I've had this
exact same problem with my pump previously as well. I replaced the
entire line before discovering the true cause and solved it (for the
time being, anyway) by isolating the pump with an in-line valve that I
leave in the off position when I'm not using water. You're right, the
symptoms are exactly the same but I'm not losing water from the tank.
I marked the level just to make sure.
