On the subject of shaft seals I have found the least
expensive dripless shaft seal, for a conventional
solid shaft. When I repowered I used the packing type
with the hemp packing (do not reccomend the tephlon).
The standard packing gland comes in two styles, one
for 12 knots and below and one for 12 knots and above.
The 12 knots and above has a 1/8 inch pipe tap to
accept water injection for the higher speeds. The
pipe tap is also the same size as a grease fitting.
When installed hand tighten the packing nut and pump
in several pumps of a good marine grade grease. After
running for a short time check and add grease as
necessary to stop leak. Sound simple, it is and quite
effective. Ours is going on its fourth season and the
shaft area at the seal looks like new, and never
leaks. Hope I did not ramble on too much. Fair
winds. Ken, AKVAVIT 1869__________________________________
