I'm still looking for a source for the hasps for the
lazarette or cockpit locker covers. Has anyone
replaced these with the original ones?

Judy,
The original hasps are available here in Europe, however, although there are large marine stores available, I believe their thinking is still that "yachting, re:boating is for the rich". Bronze hasps-alone are $21.80 and for both parts it comes to $24.16. Those are German prices, they are also available from Denmark for $13.33 and $16.14 respectively, and would involve the additional expense of shipping. Hopefully you can find a suitable substitute. Hi Frank;

looks like you can find a lot of 'spare' parts! Have you ever come
across a Sumlog cable?
I'm looking for a 10 foot cable and so far I have little luck here (the
marine store here in
Miami where I used to get it went belly-up; there are 2 more marine
stores here, but they
promise to look for- but that's all they do:)
That cable (10 foot) costs about $ 50.00 here; I'm more than happy to
pay shipping cost.
[ I have here the box from my last cable- this is what's on the box]

VDO Marine Instruments
200 010
SUMLOG Cable 10' - 3000 mm
1 836 003 012D

I hate to look at a dial that's sitting there 'dead'!
Please let me know what you can find...

Wilhelm,
I found a cable, but I am totally unfamiliar with these logs, at any rate it is a 3 meter long cable with 3 wires (just the cable without the mounting accessories, they are extra), at the present exchange rate they go for $62.70, of course you can do like me and wait for a more favorable exchange rate. All it says is that it is for a VDO mechanical log. Does that sound right? Frank V-2184 Cin-Cin. In the meantime, I will see if I can find another source.WL vega257@... wrote:

Hi Frank;

I don't think that's the right cable. It should be a rubber hose and
inside is the cable,
just like in a car- except in a car there is a metal outer hose or
whatever you like to call that.

Wilhelm,
The 3 wires are enclosed in a "hose" sheath, it appears to be the same as the one that can be seen in www.lowtension.com. Send me an address, and I'll send you a clipping out of the catalog, you should get it within a week. Frank V-2184WL vega257@... wrote:

Frank; looks like this is the right cable- I looked it up (VDO Sumlog
mechanical cable plus
swaging kit)
I take it up from here- thanks a lot for your help!

I have just replaced my lazarett covers and stern hatch with solid teak this
week. I wish I could help with the lazarret cover locks and stern hatch hasp
but I am still using the originals. I hope to include pictures in 2 weeks of
the SALT. I have made the teak covers water tight with a gasket I bought from
West Marine/Boat US and the original locks. The rubber gasket fit perfectly
right out of the package.

I have a holding tank with the original marine toilet that hasn't been used
in years. I hope that eventually I'll be able to loosen the opening on the
deck and the other valve that opens the tank for usage. Liquid wrench is my best
friend these days. I guess an overhaul is due. But do I need to haul it out
of the water to replace these and other water hoses and pumps? How do you
find a boat plumber?

What does a leach line (?) on the boom do? It's in front of the topping
lift? And what does a kicking strap do?

Hello Florance -

I need to replace my lazarette covers and stern hatch. They are being held
together with West System bonding material! Since I haven't even begun to
consider how to do this, do you have any advice? I like the idea of solid
teak. Is there any problem with cupping or splitting over time? What was
the cost?

Yes, I found a good general boat mechanic who was terrific replacing the
head and all valves and associated valves and hoses necessary. Having
wrestled with the whole mess several times to rebuild the head, I found it
was well worth getting a pro to do the job! I replaced the head two years
ago, after I had replaced all hoses, fittings and holding tank a couple of
years before. I got lots of recommendations from this group and other
friends for the Baby Lavac (uses vacuum flushing) and Raritan PHII. I
attempted to replace the head with the Lavac, but it was not a good fit. I
was successful going with the Raritan PHII with the electric pumping kit.
It has a manual over-ride which we are using until we get around to running
new wiring for the electric pump. Works great and a big improvement over
the original that leaked and needed to be rebuilt every couple of years.
Bought both from Defender with the understanding that I would return one.
They were very accommodating.

Drusie,

You might want to consider mahogony; it's a little cheaper. I replace my Vega's entire cockpit in that wood. It looks really nice. But. But you really need to keep up on the varnishing. Otherwise, the mahogony will weather badly.

Hi;

I replaced all the hatches with oakwood from a local lumberyard.
(don't use wood from Home Depot-
the birds may have been singing a few days ago on that tree).
I fiberglassed all around, painted with the same color as my boat, used
new piano-hinges (West Marine)
and the whole thing cost me about $ 50.-

Hi Florance, Do you remember the West Marine/Boat US item number for the
rubber gasket? I need to put something down. The previous owner had
replaced the locker lids with some sort of white plastic-like material (I
don't recall what he said he used). He (Or I) hadn't got to re-installing
the locks. When I bought the boat and motored her across the river for
haulout, the lids rattled something fierce. It wasn't too bad when I got
the MD6B up to speed, but at idle, I think they could hear me miles away.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I don't rmember the item number for the gaskets but they were 7' long and
7/8" wide. They are a semicircle had a hollow center. Also, they have adhesive
on the flat side. I put epoxy on the teak as well to be sure they stayed in
place. The hatches look great, feel secure and don't rattle a bit!

Hi Chris, I found the correct item number for the hatch gasket from West
Marine. It is #1725 and the correct size is 1/2" x 7' made by Taylor Made Group,
Gloversville, NY 12078.
