Drusie,
You might want to consider mahogony; it's a little cheaper. I replace my Vega's entire cockpit in that wood. It looks really nice. But. But you really need to keep up on the varnishing. Otherwise, the mahogony will weather badly.

Hello Florance -
I need to replace my lazarette covers and stern hatch. They are being held
together with West System bonding material! Since I haven't even begun to
consider how to do this, do you have any advice? I like the idea of solid
teak. Is there any problem with cupping or splitting over time? What was
the cost?
Yes, I found a good general boat mechanic who was terrific replacing the
head and all valves and associated valves and hoses necessary. Having
wrestled with the whole mess several times to rebuild the head, I found it
was well worth getting a pro to do the job! I replaced the head two years
ago, after I had replaced all hoses, fittings and holding tank a couple of
years before. I got lots of recommendations from this group and other
friends for the Baby Lavac (uses vacuum flushing) and Raritan PHII. I
attempted to replace the head with the Lavac, but it was not a good fit. I
was successful going with the Raritan PHII with the electric pumping kit.
It has a manual over-ride which we are using until we get around to running
new wiring for the electric pump. Works great and a big improvement over
the original that leaked and needed to be rebuilt every couple of years.
Bought both from Defender with the understanding that I would return one.
They were very accommodating.
