A couple questions about the iPhone and iTouch... So the iTouch doesn't
have a GPS in it. Does the iPhone have a GPS, or does it just use cell
towers to determine location? With the Navionics app, are the charts
resident on the device (iPhone or iTouch) or does the device access the
data over the internet. I'm wondering if the Navionics app only works
when I have a connection (via cell towers or wireless internet), or would
it also work out of cellphone range?

Thanks,

Nathan

My understanding is that the latest iphones are "true" GPS.

Lots of discussion on ybw.com

Not sure if my first reply was received since I sent it through email rather than thread.

Anyway, I think the newer iphones as in 3g have true GPS but you can find more discussion on ybw.com

Iphone: Navionic charts do reside on the phone so there is no connection
needed. The Iphone does use the built-in GPS rather than cell towers. I was
talking with a fellow who said he used it in Mexico -- the West Coast US
Charts extend from Canada into Mexico (at least the Baja) -- I had a boat in
LaPaz for a few years and the charts of that area are quite good. On the
mainland of Mexico they aren't as detailed, but I could still use them (with
some trepidation). They have charts available for Europe, N.Z., Australia,
Indian Ocean, and many other areas. At $9.95 for most chart packs ($19.95
for the Caribbean) they are a steal.

As for cases, the Otterbox case for the Iphone comes in three varieties --
the most robust is the Defender. When I said they weren't waterproof I meant
I wouldn't want to put my Iphone into a bucket of water as they do with VHF
radios at a boat show. But it sure will keep rain and even breaking waves
off of it. One thing about the Otterbox though is that there is sometimes a
film "bubble" over the screen. I called Otterbox and they told me two ways
to get rid of it (I did both and have had no problem for months). Someone
mentioned that they can't charge the phone with the case on, but I do every
night. One can't use the charging stand but the plug-in cable fits just fine
(the cable without the headphone charging adapter). I haven't had my Iphone
out of the case in months.

On a boat I agree that the Aquapack looks like the good way to go. They are
totally waterproof and will float is air is left in the bag. Now I have to
wonder, if I put the Otterbox into an Aquapack will it still work. I'll have
to get one and try it out. Aquapack has sacks available for many different
phones and cameras.
