If your rigging screws have enough thread left to add an inch that
would be the way to go, or maybe remove half an inch of the mast to
get back to solid material. You'd have to check with Rig Rite to see
if this unit is strong enough for a Vega. If not, they may have a
heavier one in stock.

Don't forget that if you go this route all the electrical cables that
come down through the mast will have to exit near the base and go
through the coachroof via plugs and sockets rather than through the
hole provided at the mast step.

and remember to isolate the aluminum mast from the stainless maststep
to prevent the aluminum from corroding, since stainless is the more
noble metal.

That's right Craig but it is just a matter of applying a bit of
silicon seal or Lanacote to the surfaces that come in contact. I used
silicon when I last had the mast off the boat for re-rigging in 1998
and there was no significant corrosion when I re-rigged a few months
ago. The riggers at PT rigging recommended Lanacote so that's what I
used this time.
