hi,
the fiberglass conduit is 4", I used that because it was available
(free).anything that is strong enough that gives you a few feet over the spreaders would
be ok. my last boat, a dm22 had a hinged mast step. the gin pole was much
easier than raising the mast with the foot hinged.
