Try singlehanded sailing by richard Henderson for the picture of the roller
boom with the tapered battens.

Dear Chuck,

I have owned a Vega since 20 years now and I read you note about roller
reefing.

In the past I used to roll the main, when the wind was over 5 B. However,
now the sailmaker constructed tapes or little pieces of rope on the main
sail, which allows me to reef really quick and most importantly evenly. This
is done on two places which allows me to reef lightly or strongly ,
depending on the circumstances.

I ususally do this in advance knowing what weather one may expect in open
water.

Best regards,

Hi Doug,

I still have the original setup on Lealea. It takes two of us to get a decent
reef in to the second reef point, one pulling on the leach and keeping the
roll neat while the other cranks and controls the halyard. I normally just
take the main down altogether If I need more than one reef. I find that she
sails better with jib alone anyway. I was planning to convert to slab reefing
but I just got new sails made recently for the roller reefing setup. I am
going to have reef points put in my working jib so I can reef that down before
changing that sail for a smaller one.

I saw a suggestion for keeping the roll neat and improving sail shape that I
may try. It involves attaching tapered battens to the boom. It's in a book I
have somewhere. Of course, I can't remember now which one but I'll see if I
can find it tonight.

Aloha,

Chuck Rose
