The compass of the ST6000+ Raytheon autopilot loses de proper orientation to the north after a few minutes of being calibrated. It goes loosing the north a few degrees a minute, and in an hour ... it´s completely "upsidedown" At least this what I can understand from the display ... I belive the problem is in the electronic compass unit Any experience similiar ??? Does anybody know if I can cut thes wires and re-install a new compass (avoiding to pass the wires of the new compass from the wheel, where is the autopilot proper unit ...) ??? Thank you very much Nicolas (I apologiseof my english ...)

Raymarine ST6000

I just installed a Ray Mark II in my boat. Had a compass related problem, and gave Raymarine tech support a call. The problem with mine was myself. I am color blind and had the red and green wires switched. When I talked to Raymarine the first time, I got a guy who wasn't very knowledgable, or didn't care. The second call got me someone who knew their business, and he gave me the resistance readings for the compass wiring. They are: between the red and green-4 to 10 ohms. Between the red and yellow-4 to 10 ohms. Between the green and yellow 8-10 ohms. Between the blue and the shield. 8-10 ohms. All others should be open. Also told me that if the compass reading is 248 degrees, it is an indication of a bad compass. I don't see any reason why you couldn't cut the wires, and make a splice if you make a good one. I cut mine off quite a bit, rather than have a bunch of wiring hanging. You might give Ray marine a call and make sure. Their tech support is usually pretty good. Number is 1 800 539-5539. Hope this will be helpful.

magnetic mass?

Check to see if you have any large pieces of metal or wires with current running through them near the fluxgate compass. I once put a duffle of things a few feet away from mine and the compass started to misread - even a wrench a foot or so away was enough to cause the fluxgate to lose its orientation.

Similar thing happened to ours

Is this a new install or an existing (old) install where everything used to work well and you now have the problem? Last year, our 2-year old ST6000 would slowly lose its compass heading. I also suspected the electronic compass. But that was not the problem. After talking to Raymarine, they told me it was the course computer failing. We sent it to them for repair. They returned it in less than a week. Did not cost much at all. Go to the Raymarine website for their online support, which is very good, or the phone # NiceNEasy gave you. They will help you properly diagnose the problem. Don't just guess.
