hey everybody, in my new to me boat I have a tiller pilot, what do I need to use the nmea 0183 plug?
I'm looking at buying the standard Horizon GX2200 which has nmea 0183, but I'm not sure they will talk to each other.
what do I need to plug it into my laptop (macBook pro) tu use it for navigation?
or am I totally expecting too much out of the tiller pilot?

It is difficult to answer as I'm not sure what you are expecting or wanting to do with the connections.

The radio serves as a talker on NMEA0183. What can the autopilot learn from the VHF and then use?

The macbook is a great computer, but it connects to your boat by wifi or Bluetooth. I have not seen your Tiller connected with either of these to the network.

So I guess you might be asking a bit too much. But on the good side you have a tiller and a tiler autopilot. You can input the command go on a straight line to the pilot and it will do that for you based on the bearing you give it. If you have a gps signal in your Macbook and charting software, you'll be able to watch that happening on the chart.

Ok thanks, I was wondering because the radio has an integrated gps in it and NMEA 0183, so I was thinking that maybe it could talk to the tiller pilot

Good idea, but the tiller pilot does not use the GPS signal. It may take a direction from a chart plotter - like turn 20 degrees left. But they usually do not have the smarts to follow a plotted course, it leaves that up to the skipper.

Actually the ST 2000 can communicate with a chart plotter and navigate to a waypoint or even follow a course. Used to do this with my garmin gps map 478 on my Rhodes 22. Also had the wind instrument connected and the ST 2000 could follow apparent wind angle.

Honestly, read the owner's manual. Go to tiller pilot's manufacturer website to download it. Depending on the model you have it may be possible to control the TP with your CHARTPLOTTER.... but I've not heard of a radio doing this.

ok, so a quick update, I spoke with a Standard Horizon rep and he tells me that since the GX2200 has gps I can use it with my tiller pilot, I just have to input my waypoints in the radio and it should work, I say a NMEA 0183 to usb on the web and they claim I can hook up my MacBook pro to join on the local network (NMEA) but I don't have to.

Well that does sound exciting. Please share your experience. Did the SH Tech guy send you the instructions on how to accomplish this opportunity?
