Raymarine ST4000 Fluxgate

I recently bought a used, good condition Raymarine Autohelm ST4000. Installation is now in work. The installation directions say to install the fluxgate on the boat centerline about 1/3 of the way forward from the stern. This puts it directly above the engine which doesn't seem like a good place because of the iron in the engine.
Has anyone installed a fluxgate in an S2 9.2A, and where did you put it?

The previous owners of my 1979 9.2A had one installed. The fluxgate was mounted on the compression post about 18 inches off the floor. It works fine there as long as I don't place any metal tools on the settee near it.
