Is anyone familiar with the Raymarine ST40 Bidata (depth, speed and temp) system? I am looking to put in a Depth/Speed data system on a boat I recently purchased. The boat came only with transducers but with no Depth/Speed system. The Raymarine ST40 consists of the multi data display and transducers for both depth and speed, which leads to these questions. Is there a standard thru hull size for transducers? Can I just remove the old and replace the new or do I have to drill new thru hull for the new transducer?

Thanks

Contact Raymarine to see if the systems are compatable. Otherwise, if you have existing transducers you may want to consider the ST 60 series.

I have it on my Hunter 30. Most transducers are the same or similar sizes, if they are of the same material. I have changed my transducers for the ST60 retractables, so I can pull both depth and speed out to clean.

One other thing to consider, is if the existing transducer is working, it may be compatible with the Raymarine display head, requiring only the addition of the display. Most of the transducers are made by Airmar, and will often work with multiple brands of electronics. I've used transducers supplied by Raymarine, with instruments by TackTick. :)

On my boat the unit uses two transducers - One for the speed and one for the depth/temp. The two are not the same size.

I haven't had a bit of problems with the unit.

Salty...

We have ST40 on our boat, but I'm a very long way from being an expert on the subject.

I see you already have part of the package on your boat but wonder if you should consider adding more ST40 components or maybe it would be wiser to start from scratch with a more up-to-date series.

Just my own personal non-expert experience, but I find it difficult to coordinate the wind speed/true direction/apparent direction functions because the system lacks a wind vane.

Also, is the ST40 system still being manufactured?

I needed a new masthead fixture last year and Raymarine did sell me a remanufactured unit.

Just something to think about,

The transducers are the same for the ST40 and ST60s . I have ST60s linked with seatalk to an ST40 Bidata that I installed in my nav station. The ST 40 was th original instrument in my boat.

In any event, I think most transducers regardless instrument come from the same third party supplier.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think going with the ST60 will be a better choice.

I used to have a very old depth sounder (no temp) and replaced it with an ST40 with no problems, except for the selection of nylon vs metal (I have a wooden hull).

Best of luck,
