I am thinking about upgrading my VHF radio to a Raymarine Ray 240. The system comes with a remote speaker.

Does anybody know if the handset has a speaker in it also?
Can the system be used without the remote speaker connected?
Can the remote speaker be turned off while still having full function of the handset?

Thanks.

The manual does not show a speaker in the handset
If you look at the manual you cannot even connect the handset to the radio proper without the speaker
i'd say that you can turn the remote speaker off and still have full handset function. Except that you will not be able to hear anything so I'm thinking that that would be a dumb idea since the whole idea of a VHF is to talk AND listen.
If you read the manual (hey a common theme!) i think you will find this unit to be pretty complicated to use the digital subscriber stuff. digital subscriber is a total flop and they only put it in there because the USCG has mandated that all radios have it. Don't forget to get your MMSI and AIS numbers so the thing can work as advertized.

Bill, you said that the manual does not show a speaker in the handset but the manual does make reference to adjusting the volume from the handset. This leads me to believe that there is a speaker in the handset and the adjustment function controls the handset and does not control the volume of the remote speaker. The remote speaker has an on/off/volume control knob attached to it. Since I don't own one of these units yet, I was wondering if someone can verify if the handset has a speaker built into it or not. It may be a long shot but, I wanted to see if I could get an answer before Monday from a user of this specific VHF radio so I could start planning the installation this weekend. Thanks.
